What Clients Say About Dr. Paul’s Business Consulting Services

Video Transcript

Introduction

Hey all—Paul Borosky here, owner of Quality Business Plan. In this video, I’m introducing my Basic Business Plan Template. It includes a Word document and an Excel model you can customize for a startup or existing business. I’ll show how to purchase, download, and tailor both so they fit your needs.

Who This Template Is For

Based on client and lender feedback, this is an excellent starting point for:

  • Sharing a plan with a landlord when seeking retail space

  • Small business loans (roughly $15k–$25k), where bankers want a concise, organized plan

  • Reviews by friends and family to get constructive feedback

Goal of the Video

My objective: help you create a usable plan in ~60 minutes. This isn’t meant for multi-million-dollar raises—it’s a streamlined framework that gets you organized and presentable quickly.

What’s Included

  • Customizable Word document (Microsoft Word required; not for Google Docs)

  • Basic Excel financial model for projections

  • This tutorial showing exactly how to use both

Note: I’m a professional business plan writer, but I don’t provide free phone consultations for the template. The tutorial is your guide. If you need a done-for-you plan or projections, I’m available as a paid service.

About Me (Why Listen to Paul)

I’m a professional business writer and business plan consultant. For folks who can’t hire me for a full custom plan, my templates are an affordable alternative. I’ve published business-planning books on Amazon (search “Paul Borosky MBA”). I also teach as an adjunct professor and SME in business and finance.

Using the Word Template

Files You’ll Receive

You’ll download a Word file and an Excel file.

Title Page & Table of Contents

  • Replace the title with your company name/logo.

  • After you customize sections, Update Table of Contents → “Update entire table.”

Executive Summary (Fill This Last)

Add: company name and entity type (LLC, Corp, etc.), city/state, owners, what you sell, hours, target market, financial highlights, and funding request. Pull content from your completed plan so the summary matches.

Company Description

Mirror key details here: legal structure, location, hours, and what you sell.

  • Competitive Advantages: What makes you different (pricing, service, speed, specialty).

  • Products/Services: Describe clearly.

  • Primary Target Market: Who’s most likely to buy and where they are.

  • Pricing Strategy: Value, low-cost, or premium—state it.

  • Location: Describe the site; use percentages of space for clarity.

  • Objectives & Timeline: What you’ll accomplish in your first 3 months (funding, build-out, hire, open).

Industry Analysis (Keep It Broad)

Focus on industry trends (revenues, growth, margins) rather than trying to inventory every local competitor. Update the provided charts by clicking the element and editing the values/titles.

SWOT Analysis

Editable Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats. Click into the bullets and replace text; keep the layout clean and readable.

Organization & Org Chart

Define the legal structure and list roles/responsibilities (CEO, manager, key jobs).
Update the org chart by clicking the smart graphic and editing labels. Delete boxes if you have fewer roles.

Marketing Plan

Three channels are outlined with starter copy:

  • Traditional (signage, print)

  • Internet (website/SEO)

  • Social media (consistent photo/video posting)
    Customize or expand as needed.

Funding Request

List a specific dollar amount required to start. Then outline expected terms with reasonable ranges for interest rate and repayment length. Be precise on the total dollar figure.

Financial Projections (Word Side)

Quarterly tables for Year 1 (Q1–Q4) plus a 5-year pro forma income statement are placeholders you’ll replace with results from the Excel model (steps below).

Using the Excel Financial Model

Overview & Editing Rules

The model has four tabs: Information, Profit & Loss (Year 1), Income Statement (5-Year), Projections.
Only change dark blue input cells on the Information tab—adding lines elsewhere can break formulas.

Revenue Setup

  • Average customer ticket (rename if needed)

  • Variable cost % (COGS as a percentage of sales)

  • Customers/items per day

  • Operating days per week
Adjusting these updates all downstream statements automatically.

Labor

Set owner pay, number of managers/employees, hourly rates, and monthly hours (e.g., 172 for full-time, adjust for part-time). All totals recalc automatically.

Startup Costs & Financing

Enter equity and loan amount, then set interest rate and term; payments and interest flow through automatically. Add build-out, working capital, and major equipment amounts in the provided lines (don’t add new rows).

Monthly Fixed Costs

Update rent, utilities, insurance, marketing, etc. The model totals them for you.

Tax & Growth Assumptions

Set tax rate and Year 2–5 growth assumptions (sales, costs). For monthly sales growth in Year 1, adjust the designated row (e.g., from 3% to 2%).

Exporting Back to Word

  • Copy Year-1 P&L Quarter 1 → paste over Q1 in Word. Repeat for Q2–Q4.

  • Copy the 5-Year Income Statement → paste into the pro forma table in Word.
Save your files—you now have a complete, consistent plan.
