Is the Problem the Document, or the Business?
People use business plan consultant and business plan writer as if they were the same job. They are not, and hiring the wrong one wastes money in both directions. A writer paid to fix a business that does not work yet produces a well-written plan for a business that does not work. A consultant paid to produce a document bills consulting hours for typing. Here is how to tell which one you need. Dr. Paul Borosky, DBA, MBA does both, so this page has no reason to steer you.

Hire a business plan writer when you know what the business is and a lender, landlord, franchisor or partner needs it on paper with projections. Hire a business plan consultant when you are not sure the business works yet, the numbers do not add up, or the business is already open and the plan is not the problem. If you are not sure which one you are, that uncertainty is the answer: start with a consulting conversation, and write the plan when the business is settled.
What Each One Actually Does
| Business plan writer | Business plan consultant | |
|---|---|---|
| The job | Turn a settled business idea into a lender-ready document and financial model | Work out whether the idea holds, fix the pricing, the cost structure or the operation, then decide what to put on paper |
| Starts with | Your costs, your pricing, your loan amount, your lender's checklist | Your questions. Why is the margin thin, can this location work, should we add the second truck |
| Ends with | A finished plan in Word and a working model in Excel, delivered on a date | A decision, a set of numbers you believe, and sometimes a plan as the last step |
| Billed as | A fixed price per plan size | Hourly or a monthly retainer |
| Wrong fit when | You are not sure the business works yet. The plan will be well written and wrong. | You just need the document. You will pay consulting rates for writing. |
| Dr. Paul's version | Custom plan writing, five sizes, 7 days or less | Business consulting and fractional CFO work, for owners already open or still deciding |
Three Questions That Sort It in a Minute
Can you state your prices and your monthly costs today?
If yes, you are ready for a writer. If the answer is "roughly" or "it depends," the model cannot be built yet, and a writer will either guess or stall. That is consulting work first.
Does someone outside the business need the document?
A lender, a landlord, a franchisor, an investor, a partner. If yes, a writer is the right call and the deadline is theirs. If nobody outside the business has asked for it, you may want a decision, not a document.
Is the business already open?
If it is open and the problem is cash, pricing, staffing or growth, the plan is not what is broken. That is consulting, and often the fractional CFO version of it. Writing a new plan for an open business that is losing money documents the problem without fixing it.
When You Need Both, and in What Order
The most common case is both, in sequence. An owner has an idea, a location in mind and a rough budget. A short consulting conversation settles the pricing, the cost structure and the loan amount. Then the plan gets written from those settled numbers, and it is right the first time because the thinking happened before the typing.
The reverse order is the expensive one. A plan written before the numbers were settled gets to the lender, gets questions the owner cannot answer, and comes back for a rewrite. Now the owner is paying for the plan twice and the consulting anyway.
Dr. Paul does both jobs himself, which is why the first call is a conversation about your business and not a sales pitch for either one. If the numbers are settled, the professional business plan writer page explains what the plan includes and the prices page matches a plan size to your loan. If they are not, start with business consulting.
If a lender has already declined a plan you wrote, do not start with either one. Start with editing and review. Dr. Paul reads the plan the way the lender did and tells you whether the document or the business is the problem. Send the plan and the lender's notes.
Consultant vs. Writer Questions
What is the difference between a business plan consultant and a business plan writer?
A business plan writer produces the document and the financial model from a business that is already settled: known prices, known costs, known loan amount. A business plan consultant works on the business itself, pricing, cost structure, location, operations, and may or may not produce a plan at the end. Writers charge a fixed price per plan. Consultants charge by the hour or on retainer.
Which one do I need?
If you can state your prices and monthly costs today and someone outside the business needs the document, hire a writer. If you are not sure the business works, the numbers do not add up, or the business is already open and losing money, hire a consultant. If you are not sure which you are, start with the consulting conversation.
Does Dr. Paul do both?
Yes. Dr. Paul writes business plans at published prices in 7 days or less, and provides business consulting and fractional CFO services for owners who are open or still deciding. He does both himself, so the first call is about which one you actually need.
