A Turnaround Consultant’s Perspective
Is Your Spring Hill Business in Trouble?
Every month you wait on a cash problem, it eats a little more of the money you would need to fix it. The trucks roll and the customers like you; the business side is what is sinking, and Dr. Paul helps you take it back yourself.
A Spring Hill business in trouble usually shows three signs: cash runs out before the month does, bills get paid by who calls loudest, and good people start leaving. One is a warning. Two is a problem. Three means you start a turnaround this week. Dr. Paul has helped 1,000+ owners read those signs over 14+ years, and this page, part of the Tampa Bay business consultant playbook, gives you the checklist and the first thirty days.

The Warning Signs
Eight Signs Your Spring Hill Business Is in Trouble
Trouble shows up as small things you learn to live with. Read the list. Count the ones that sound like your week.
- Cash runs out before the month doesAct Now
You know the date the account goes to zero, and it is before the next big deposit.
- You pay bills by who calls loudestAct Now
There is no plan. The vendor who threatens gets paid. The quiet ones wait.
- Payroll taxes or sales tax are behindAct Now
This is the one that grows teeth fastest. Call your accountant today.
- Good people are quittingWatch
The best workers leave first because they can. The ones who stay are the ones with nowhere else to go.
- Sales are up and the bank balance is notWatch
Busy is not the same as profitable. Something is priced wrong or costs too much.
- You stopped opening the booksWatch
Not because you are lazy. Because you are scared of what is in there.
- One customer or one job carries the monthWatch
Lose it and the month is gone.
- You are working more hours for less moneyWatch
The business is using you as the cushion.
Notice what is missing: “the economy” and “bad luck.” Every sign above lives inside your business, so the fix does too. The Tampa Bay business consultant pillar sees it in every city: the owner is not short on skill. The business is short on structure.

Dr. Paul’s Insight: Turnover Is a Warning Light
“Dani,” said Doctor Owl. “When the brothers do a good job, how do they find out?”
Dani frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Do you tell them?”
“They know they’re doing a good job. If they weren’t, I’d tell them.”
“So you speak to them when something is wrong.”
Dani started to answer and stopped.
Dr. Paul’s take: Owners in trouble look at sales first. But when cash gets tight, the owner gets short with people, the only feedback anyone hears is bad news, and the best people leave first because they can. In a place like Spring Hill, where most crews live and work along the same few roads, a reputation as a hard place to work travels fast. Before you cut anything, find out why people are walking out the door. The full guide on how to motivate employees walks through it step by step.
Hernando County Rules
No Yearly Checkpoint, and One Pot of Money That Is Not Yours
Two Hernando County facts change how a Spring Hill owner should run the first weeks of a turnaround.
Hernando County
No receipt to renew
The Hernando County Tax Collector says the county repealed its business tax receipt ordinance effective August 1, 2007. Less paperwork, but also no yearly date that makes you look at the business. Trouble could build for months with nobody outside asking questions. Set your own checkpoint: one hour a month with the bank statement and the unpaid bills.
Sales tax
Do not borrow from the state
Hernando’s 0.5 percent surtax, on top of the state’s 6 percent, means most taxable sales carry 6.5 percent. Florida law says that tax becomes state funds the moment you collect it, due on the first of the next month and late after the 20th. When cash is tight, it can look like a bridge loan. It is not.
Sources: Hernando County Tax Collector; Florida Department of Revenue, Form DR-15DSS, calendar year 2026; section 212.15, Florida Statutes. Checked 10/29/2026.
For a Spring Hill business in trouble, the first move is simple: put collected sales tax in its own account the day it comes in, and pay it on time. Then the checklist above tells you where the rest of the cash went.
The First Thirty Days
What a Turnaround Looks Like, Week by Week
A turnaround is not a big speech. It is four weeks of boring, specific work. Here is the order Dr. Paul helps owners work through it.
- Week 1
Stop the bleeding
Build a thirteen-week cash forecast: every dollar in, every dollar out, week by week. Freeze spending that is not tied to a sale. List every past-due bill and who it is owed to. If taxes are behind, that goes to your accountant first.
- Week 2
Find the leak
Rank every service, product, or customer by what it leaves you after its own costs. Most owners find one or two that lose money on every job. The accounting and finance guides show you how to run the math.
- Week 3
Talk to people
Call vendors before they call you. Offer a real payment plan you can keep. Sit down with your crew and tell them the truth, then ask what they see. They know where time and money get wasted.
- Week 4
Make the cuts and set the rhythm
Drop or reprice what loses money. Set one weekly hour to review cash, sales, and the forecast. That hour is the habit that keeps the next crisis from sneaking up. It is the Organize step of Organize-Plan-Grow™.
Decide Now
Three Decisions That Cannot Wait
These three get more expensive every week you wait.
Decision 1
Which bills come first
Payroll and payroll taxes, then the things that keep the doors open: rent, insurance, key suppliers. Everything else gets a plan, not a promise. Get an accountant to confirm the order for your situation.
Decision 2
What to stop doing
The job that loses money, the customer who pays in ninety days, the side line nobody buys. Stopping feels like shrinking. In a turnaround it is how you stay open. Free small business education covers how to spot the losers.
Decision 3
Who runs the fix
If you are on the truck all day, nobody is running the turnaround. Somebody has to own the forecast every week. The small business management guides show how to free that hour up.
The Spring Hill Side
No City Hall, So You Need to Know Where Help Lives
Spring Hill is big, but it is not a city. That changes where you go when you need help.

Three places a Spring Hill owner can turn
Hernando County Office of Economic Development. Because there is no city government, county staff are your local business contact. Their small business resource list is the place to start.
Florida SBDC at USF, Hernando. No-cost business consulting, listed on that same county page. Good for a second opinion on the numbers.
SCORE Pasco-Hernando. No-cost volunteer mentoring, plus free and low-cost workshops, for small businesses in both counties.
A shop on US 19 or a contractor working the Spring Hill Drive neighborhoods could use all three and still need someone in the books every week until the fix sticks. That is where Dr. Paul fits, by phone and video from Deltona, as a Florida business consultant who has seen these signs statewide.
