Multiple Locations, From a Consultant
Running Multiple Locations From Riverview
Every week your second location does things its own way, the gap costs more: another redo, another unhappy regular, another manager guessing. Waiting to write the system down is the expensive habit.
Two locations rarely fail because the second market is wrong. They fail because the second location does everything a little differently, and nobody wrote down the right way. The fix for multiple locations, Riverview or anywhere, is three shared systems: one written way to do each core job, one weekly scorecard, and one meeting rhythm that ends in clear decisions. Dr. Paul, Riverview business consultant, has helped 1,000+ owners build systems like these.

Why Location Two Drifts
Same Sign Out Front, Different Business Inside
Nobody plans for the second location to be worse. It just slides, one small difference at a time, because the owner can only stand in one place.
Location one, where you are
- You answer every question on the spot.
- You fix mistakes before customers see them.
- You know the numbers because you watch the register.
- Staff learned the job by watching you.
Location two, where you are not
- Questions wait for you, or get guessed at.
- Mistakes reach customers before you hear about them.
- You see the numbers at month end, if then.
- Staff learned the job from someone who learned it from you.
That last line is the whole problem. Every handoff loses a little. By the third person, your method is a rumor. The fix is not more of you. It is a version of you on paper that every location reads the same way. That is the Organize step in Dr. Paul’s Organize-Plan-Grow™ Strategy.
Owners who land here are usually excellent at the work and newer to the business side. Dr. Paul helps you build the systems that close the gap, and you run them.

The First Ninety Days of a Second Location
Whether location two is opening next month or opened last year, build the systems in this order.
- 1Before openingWrite the core jobs down
Opening, closing, the top five tasks that make or lose money, and how to handle an unhappy customer. Short, plain, with photos where they help.
- 2Weeks one to fourPick the weekly scorecard
Five to seven numbers, the same for every location: sales, labor cost, a quality check, a customer measure, cash. Same day, same format, every week.
- 3Month twoSet the meeting rhythm
One short weekly meeting with each location manager. Numbers first, then problems, then decisions with a name and a date next to each one.
- 4Month threeTest it without you
Stay away for a week. Watch the scorecard, not the room. Whatever breaks is the next procedure to write.
- 5Every month afterCompare and copy
When one location beats the other on a number, find out why and write the better way into the shared procedure.
The Riverview Side
A Fast-Growing Community With No City Hall
Riverview grew by about half in a decade. That pull could tempt a successful owner into a second spot fast, often on the other side of I-75 or up US 301.

Hillsborough County Tax Collector
New businesses get a local business tax receipt before they operate. Receipts expire September 30 and renew from July 1. Ask how your new location should be set up before it opens.
Brandon Riverview Chamber of Commerce
The former Greater Riverview Chamber became the Central Hillsborough County Chamber in 2024, then merged with the Greater Brandon Chamber. A room full of owners who have opened second locations nearby.
Florida SBDC at USF
No-cost, confidential consulting from the regional office at USF CONNECT in Tampa, a short drive up I-75.
Multiple locations is one of twenty questions on the Tampa Bay business consultant pillar, the hub for growing owners from Riverview to Bradenton.
From the Book
Dr. Paul’s Insight: One Instruction, Three Ridges
“Colt,” said Doctor Owl. “Which ridge did you mean?”
“The ridge. Pine Ridge. The east one.”
“Greta. Which ridge did you hear?”
“North ridge,” said Greta. “Because that’s the one we always use on Tuesdays.”
“And the other two guides?”
Greta checked her clipboard. “One went to the south ridge, because it’s closest to lunch. One went to Pine Ridge.” She lowered the clipboard. “He got it right because he guessed.”
Dr. Paul’s take: Colt knew exactly which ridge he meant. Nobody else did. That is a second location in one scene: the owner gives an instruction that is perfectly clear in their own head, and each location hears it a different way. In Riverview, where location two may sit across I-75 from location one, you cannot walk over and fix it in person every time. Write it down, say it once to everyone, and check what they heard. Dr. Paul’s guide to running an effective meeting shows how to make one meeting decide something.
Per-Location Paperwork
Each New Address Can Mean Another Receipt
Riverview sits in unincorporated Hillsborough County, so your first location answers to the county. Location two may not stay that simple.
The county counts locations
Hillsborough’s business tax applies to each retail store in the county, adds a charge for each extra place of business for many sellers of goods, and requires a separate receipt for each professional office.
Cross a city line, add a city
Open in Tampa, Temple Terrace, or Plant City and the county receipt is still required in addition to the city’s. Plant City says that in most cases you pay both.
Where the growth is headed
Plan Hillsborough projects unincorporated Hillsborough County growing from 1,019,128 people in 2020 to 1,412,898 by 2050, the lion’s share of the county’s new residents.

Running multiple locations? Riverview owners should treat paperwork like any other system: one list per address with the receipt, the renewal date, and who owns it. Put it on the weekly scorecard so a missed renewal never depends on your memory.
