The Charges That Renew While You Are Busy

Most marketing waste is not one big mistake. It is a handful of small monthly charges nobody has looked at since they were set up. That is how a marketing budget Hollywood FL owners set once can quietly drift. Here is how that adds up.

Illustration · a made-up Hollywood shop
Paid directory listing, no calls traced to it$150
Boosted posts on auto-renew$250
Event sponsorship, paid monthly$300
Website “SEO package” with no report$200
Untracked spend per month$900
$10,800

What those four lines cost in a year, in this illustration: $900 times 12 months.

Some of it may be working. None of it can prove it. Every month you wait to check, another $900 goes out.

Pull your last three months of bank and card statements and list every marketing charge. Most owners find at least one they forgot existed. The small business accounting and finance guide shows how to set up a separate marketing line so this never hides again.

Dr. Paul’s Insight: Seen Is Not the Same as Chosen

Dr. Paul’s Insight · From Marketing for Small Businesses, Book 4, Chapter 18, “The Mayor’s Name on Everything: A Horse’s Sponsorships” · Dr. Paul’s Fabled Forest Business School Series

“My name is on every banner in the forest. How is that not marketing?”

Dr. Paul’s take: The horse is not wrong that his name is everywhere. He is wrong that being seen is the same as being chosen. Sponsorships, banners, and logo placements feel like marketing because people notice them, but noticing is not buying. In Hollywood, a name on an event banner or a sign near the beach could be worth every dollar, or nothing, and the only way to know is to ask each new customer where they heard about you. Fund what you can trace. The marketing budget card in Dr. Paul’s small business marketing guide covers the rest.

Hollywood’s Big Employers Are Already Your Neighbors

Before you spend on reaching “everyone,” look at who already works in Hollywood every day.

10,000+companies in the City of Hollywood
About 80%of Port Everglades lies inside Hollywood
3 hospitalsMemorial Regional, Memorial Hospital South, and Joe DiMaggio Children’s, all on the major-employer list

Source: Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, Hollywood profile, updated April 14, 2025. The same list names the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Chewy, and HEICO among the city’s major employers.

A marketing budget Hollywood FL owners build around those workers could look very different from one aimed at the whole county. Hospital and port crews often work shifts, so a lunch special, an early-morning slot, or a pickup window may be the offer that fits. A small, traceable test near one big campus can tell you more than a broad ad ever will.

Treat each idea like any other line on the worksheet below: one offer, one code, ninety days. If it books named customers, it moves to “Keep.” If it does not, you only spent the test slice to learn it.

Find Your Number in Four Questions

Skip the rules of thumb you read online. Your budget should come from your own customers and your own margins.

1. What is a customer worth?
Average profit from one new customer over their first year. Illustration: a customer who spends $1,000 a year at a 40 percent margin is worth about $400.
2. What can you pay to win one?
A slice of that value, so the customer still makes you money. Illustration: a quarter of $400 is $100 per new customer.
3. How many do you need?
New customers per month to hit your goal, after the ones you lose. Illustration: 8 a month.
4. Multiply
Illustration: 8 customers times $100 is an $800 monthly budget. If that is more than cash flow allows, start lower and raise it only as the tracked results come in.

Then split it: most of the money on the channels that already produced named customers, a small slice to test one new idea, nothing on what cannot be traced. That is the “Plan” stage of Dr. Paul’s Organize-Plan-Grow™ strategy, applied to marketing.

Keep, Test, or Cut: Label Every Line

Copy this table onto paper. One row per charge. The only column that matters is the third one.

Line item (illustration)MonthlyCustomers you can nameLabel
Google Business Profile and reviews$0Most new calls say “found you on Google”Keep
Referral thank-you cards$40Several referrals in the last quarterKeep
New neighborhood mailer$250Too early; has its own offer codeTest
Event sponsorship banner$300Nobody has mentioned itCut
Paid directory listing$150None traced in a yearCut

Cutting is not forever. A cut item can come back as a test, with a code and a ninety-day deadline. More on tracking in the small business marketing guide.

Visitor Dollars or Neighbor Dollars? Know Which You Are Chasing

Hollywood has two very different customers a few miles apart. Where your money goes depends on which one keeps your lights on.

The beach

Hollywood Beach Broadwalk

A roughly 2.5-mile oceanfront promenade lined with hotels, apartments, restaurants, and shops, named a Great Public Space by the American Planning Association in 2013. Visitor-facing businesses may get more from maps, hotel-desk referrals, and reviews than from local print.

Downtown

Hollywood Boulevard

Downtown, the crowd is mostly residents, workers, and locals running errands, with a different rhythm than the beach. Neighbor-facing businesses may get more from repeat offers, referrals, and local groups than from visitor-style ads.

  • Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. A membership is a marketing expense like any other. Put it on the worksheet and track the referrals it produces. Chamber nonprofit filing
  • City and county receipts. The City of Hollywood’s application asks for a current Broward County Tax Collector account and, for most locations, a Certificate of Use. Budget for licensing before marketing a new spot.

Marketing Budget Questions Hollywood Owners Ask

How much should a small business spend on marketing?
Work backward from your own numbers instead of a rule of thumb. Decide how many new customers you need each month, then how much you can afford to spend to win one, based on what a customer is worth to you in profit. Multiply the two. If that number is more than you can afford, start smaller and grow it as the results come in.
How do I know which marketing is actually working?
Ask every new customer how they heard about you, and write it down. Give each channel its own phone number, code, or landing page where you can. After ninety days, count customers by source. Anything that cannot point to a customer by then goes in the cut pile.
Are sponsorships and banners worth the money?
Sometimes. They build recognition, but recognition is hard to measure. Before you renew one, ask whether any customer has mentioned it. Add an offer or code tied to the sponsorship so you can count results. If nobody ever mentions it, that money may work harder somewhere you can track.
What do I need for a City of Hollywood business tax receipt?
The City’s online application asks for a signed lease or proof of ownership, any required county, state, or federal licenses, a current account with the Broward County Tax Collector, entity or fictitious name papers, and a Certificate of Use for most locations. The City’s business tax year runs October 1 to September 30.

Bring three months of marketing bills. Leave with a budget that pays for itself.
