Michigan Business Plan Writer: When the Plant Retools
When a Ford, GM or Stellantis plant shuts down to retool, a Metro Detroit supplier can wait weeks for cash. Up North, January does the same to an inn on M-22. With Dr. Paul’s plan, a lender can see how your Michigan business pays its bills through those dead weeks.

Michigan Cities and the Question Each Plan Must Answer
Detroit grant rounds, ArtPrize crowds, campus buyers and cherry season all move money in different ways. Your plan should follow the one that pays you.
| City | What Drives Demand | The Plan Question |
|---|---|---|
| Detroit | Corktown and Midtown residents, Eastern Market shoppers, auto show visitors | What does Motor City Match need to see? |
| Grand Rapids | ArtPrize crowds downtown, Medical Mile staff on weekdays | How many cups on an ArtPrize weekend? |
| Ann Arbor | University of Michigan labs, Michigan Medicine, startups working with Ann Arbor SPARK, the regional economic development group | Who buys besides the university? |
| Lansing | Capitol workers, Michigan State staff, Spartan Stadium Saturdays | Capitol lunch crowd or campus crowd? |
| Traverse City | Cherry Festival visitors, summer tourists, Food & Wine guests | Can Venture North help an inn get through January? |
Motor City Match awards cash grants in rounds to owners opening in Detroit neighborhoods like Corktown, Midtown and around Eastern Market.
“What does a Motor City Match application need from a Detroit business plan?”
The Plan FixWrite to the scoring for the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) round you are entering. Include the Corktown or Eastern Market address, signed build-out bids, and a clear line showing how the grant closes the gap a lender leaves.
ArtPrize spreads public art across Downtown and Monroe Center over several weekends, while the Medical Mile stays busy on weekdays.
“How should a Grand Rapids coffee shop forecast ArtPrize weeks?”
The Plan FixCount ArtPrize weekend cups from Monroe Center foot traffic and staff weekday mornings for Medical Mile nurses and researchers. Then sell office coffee service to Bridge Street employers to hold volume through the winter.
Ann Arbor SPARK supports software and mobility startups spun out of University of Michigan labs on North Campus.
“Who buys from an Ann Arbor software startup besides the university?”
The Plan FixMap buyers outside Michigan Medicine and campus departments, and test pricing through SPARK’s entrepreneur services. Keep Kerrytown office costs lean until the first outside contract closes.
State government and Michigan State University anchor Lansing payrolls, with Capitol workers downtown and campus staff around Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.
“How should a Lansing lunch spot split its market between the Capitol and campus?”
The Plan FixSize weekday demand from state office workers near the Capitol and Michigan State staff in East Lansing. Open on the Michigan Avenue corridor between the two, and add a crew for Spartan Stadium Saturdays.
The National Cherry Festival fills the waterfront along Grandview Parkway each July, then Front Street quiets down once winter sets in.
“Can a Traverse City inn get through a quiet winter?”
The Plan FixPrice rooms at peak for Cherry Festival week and summer, and run Traverse City Food & Wine in mid to late August as a second high week. Keep the Venture North loan small enough that January’s thin bookings off M-22 and US-31 can still keep up with it.
Customers and suppliers rarely stop at the border. See Dr. Paul’s pages for nearby Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

Planning a Michigan Business Through the Quiet Weeks
A retooling plant and an empty January look different on the street. On a cash flow statement, they look the same.
- State loan programs, matched to your lender. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) runs Capital Access, Collateral Support and Loan Participation through participating lenders. The file is written for that lender’s credit review: cash by month, what the loan buys and how the collateral gap closes.
- Motor City Match rounds, ready to submit. Detroit storefront owners get applications built for the round they are entering, with the address, budget and financials the reviewers look for.
- Changeover weeks on the calendar. Suppliers name the weeks the plant they serve is likely to idle for retooling, and the forecast runs those weeks at little or no revenue. The lender sees payroll funded before the line restarts.
- The state filing on the opening checklist. Michigan forms entities through the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) and its MiBusiness Registry Portal, not the Secretary of State. The plan puts that filing on the timeline so the opening date holds.
- Up North seasons on separate months. An inn or shop off M-22 gets summer, fall color and the January lull as separate months, so a Venture North request is sized to what winter bookings can handle.
The number Dr. Paul watches first on a Michigan plan is weeks of cash: how long the business can pay rent, payroll and the note with nothing shipping and no rooms booked. A lender already believes your summer or your full production run. Push that number past the longest quiet stretch you have lived through, and the rest of the plan gets easier to fund.

When a plant retools and supplier orders stall for weeks, only the cash already in the bank keeps the doors open. Through Fabled Forest stories, the book covers tracking money in and out and building the reserve that carries a business through a slow season.

Michigan Offices That Will Read Your Plan
Michigan plans pass through more hands than the bank. Here is who reads them and what each one checks.
SBA Michigan District Office
One office in Detroit’s McNamara Building serves the whole state, from Metro Detroit to the Upper Peninsula.
MEDC Debt Programs
The Capital Access Program, Collateral Support and Loan Participation run through participating lenders. Collateral Support can cover a collateral gap, but the bank still reads your cash flow first.
Motor City Match, Venture North and LEAP
Detroit’s grant rounds come from the city and DEGC. Venture North lends across northern Michigan counties. LEAP’s One & All program coaches entrepreneurs in Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties.
MI-SBDC
Hosted by Grand Valley State University, with regional offices statewide. Many consultants will review a plan before the bank meeting.
LARA Corporations Division
LLCs and corporations form with LARA through the MiBusiness Registry Portal. Your good-standing certificate comes from LARA, not the Secretary of State.
LARA and the County Clerk
LARA issues many occupational licenses, such as builder and cosmetology. A sole owner trading under another name registers it with the county clerk, while LLCs and corporations register theirs with LARA.
