What Two Weeks Away Looks Like, Now and Fixed

Picture the trip. Left column is most owner-run shops today. Right column is the goal.

Today

Customers wait for quotes until you are back.

Fixed

A written price sheet lets your lead quote standard jobs the same way you would.

Today

The phone rings on the beach. Every question comes to you.

Fixed

Your team knows which decisions they own and which can wait a week.

Today

Vendors do not get paid, or get paid twice.

Fixed

Bills follow a simple weekly routine someone else can run.

Today

Quality slips because nobody checks the work.

Fixed

A short checklist for each job, and one person who signs off.

Most owners stuck in the left column are experts at the craft and newer to the business side. Dr. Paul helps you build the right column, one job at a time, and you stay in charge of it.

Four Buckets for Everything on Your List

Write down every job you did last week. Then ask the questions in order. The first yes is the bucket.

Question 1

Can it stop?

Reports nobody reads, meetings that decide nothing, favors that became habits. Drop it.

Question 2

Can someone do it now?

They already know how. You just never let go. Delegate it this week.

Question 3

Could someone do it if it were written down?

Most of your list lands here. Document it, then hand it off.

Last

Only you

Big decisions, key relationships, the next plan. Keep it, and protect the time to do it well.

The documenting bucket is where owners stall, because writing a job down feels slower than doing it. It is slower. Once. The small business management guide covers SOPs and handoffs step by step.

Dr. Paul’s Insight: Six Legs Are Not Enough

Dr. Paul’s Insight · Dr. Paul’s Fabled Forest Business School Series · Book 1, Chapter 2 Management and Leadership for Small Businesses: “Six Legs Are Not Enough: An Ant’s Backlog”

“Alton,” he said. “How many jobs are on this list?”

“Forty-one.”

“How many of them can only you do?”

Alton opened his mouth to say all of them. Then he closed it, because he was a technician, and technicians answer the question that was asked.

“I’d have to look.”

“Let us look.”

Dr. Paul’s take: Most Brandon owners have an Alton list, and most would say “all of them” before they looked. Looking is the whole trick. When you go line by line, the jobs that truly need you shrink to a handful, and the rest become hiring, training, or writing-down problems you can solve. That is the four-bucket sort above. Dr. Paul’s guide on how to delegate work shows how to hand a job off so it stays handed off.

A Big Community With No City Hall

Brandon is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Hillsborough County, with 114,626 people at the 2020 Census. That is a lot of customers and a lot of owner-run businesses serving them.

County Paperwork, Not City

No city government means no city business tax receipt. The county side runs through the Hillsborough County Tax Collector, on a tax period of October 1 to September 30. Put renewal on someone’s written routine, not your memory.

Florida SBDC at Hillsborough County

No-cost, confidential consulting and training, based at the Entrepreneur Collaborative Center, 2101 E. Palm Ave. in Tampa.

Brandon Riverview Chamber of Commerce

Formed from the Greater Brandon Chamber and the Central Hillsborough Chamber. Other owners who could tell you how they stepped back.

The renewal date is a small example of the big problem. If only the owner knows when it is due, the business depends on the owner. A Brandon business consultant helps you find every one of those hidden jobs. The Tampa Bay pillar covers the other growth and survival questions in the region.

A Week-by-Week Plan to Get Out of the Middle

Four weeks. One small handoff at a time. You do not need to disappear. You need to stop being the bottleneck.

WeekDo thisDone when
Week 1List every job you do. Sort each into the four buckets. The list exists on paper, not in your head.
Week 2Drop the dead jobs. Delegate three you can hand off today.Someone else did them and you did not redo them.
Week 3Write down the two jobs that eat the most of your time.A team member follows the steps without calling you.
Week 4Take one full day off. Note every call and every problem. That note is next month’s list.

This is the Organize step of Dr. Paul’s Organize-Plan-Grow™ Strategy. Repeat the loop monthly and the two-week test starts to pass.

The Vacation Is Optional. The Emergency Is Not.

Nobody plans the surgery, the family crisis, or the storm.

Owners put this off because there is never a slow week. But the week you are forced out could come with no warning. A business that only runs with you could lose customers in days and cash in weeks.

It also caps the price. A buyer or lender looks at an owner-dependent business and sees risk. A business with written systems and a team that runs it could be worth more, and it is easier to finance. Business consulting with Dr. Paul starts with the list.

Health Care, Hurricanes, and the Owner Nobody Can Replace

The local business mix shapes how owner dependence shows up. Two Brandon-area facts make the two-week test feel less like a vacation question.

A health-heavy chamber

Health and wellness businesses make up about 30 percent of the Brandon Riverview Chamber’s membership, and the chamber says three major hospitals are expanding outpatient and emergency sites. In a small practice, the owner is often the main provider too. If the license holder is out, the schedule could empty.

Storm weeks are the real test

After Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024, the SBA and the Florida SBDC at Hillsborough County opened a Business Recovery Center at the Entrepreneur Collaborative Center to help owners with disaster loan applications. That paperwork landed while owners were also fixing their own homes.

Sources: Invest: interview with the Brandon Riverview Chamber of Commerce (July 2026); Hillsborough County, Business Recovery Center opening (October 16, 2024).

Can your Brandon business run without you in a storm week? Run the two-week test for the worst case, not the beach. Who opens, who answers patients or customers, and who files the insurance claim and the loan paperwork if you cannot? For a provider-owned practice, the fix may be a second clinician, a written front-desk playbook, or an office manager who owns billing. Write it down before storm season, not during it.

Owner Dependence Questions Brandon Owners Ask

How do I know if my business depends too much on me?
Run the two-week test on paper. List what would stop, slow down, or go wrong if you were gone for two weeks with no phone. If sales, quality, cash, or customer problems would slip, the business depends on you. The longer the list, the bigger the risk.
How do I start making my business run without me?
List every job you do in a normal week. Sort each one into four buckets: only you can do it, someone else can do it now, someone else could do it once it is written down, or it can stop. Hand off the easiest jobs first, write down the next ones, and check the results weekly.
What business tax receipt does a Brandon business need?
Brandon is an unincorporated community in Hillsborough County, so there is no city receipt to get. The county side runs through the Hillsborough County Tax Collector, where new businesses open a business tax account, on a tax period of October 1 to September 30. Confirm any zoning or license rules for your type of business with the county.
How can Dr. Paul help me step back from my business?
Dr. Paul works through the job list with you, helps you decide what to hand off and to whom, and checks in as you write things down and train people. He helps you build the system. You stay the owner and make the calls.

Count the jobs only you can do. It is fewer than you think.
