A Business Consultant’s Perspective
Overwhelmed Running Your Lutz Business?
“Can you squeeze us in Thursday?” “Sure, no problem.” That quick yes just landed on a week that already had no room in it.
An overwhelmed business owner Lutz customers rely on usually does not have a time problem; it is a sorting problem. You are the best at the work itself, and Dr. Paul, Lutz business consultant, helps you sort the business side yourself, one weekly hour at a time. Some jobs should be dropped, some handed off, and some written down once. A steady hour with someone outside the business who asks the hard questions and holds you to the answers fixes the sort. Dr. Paul has done this with 1,000+ owners over 14+ years.

Start With the Story
Dr. Paul’s Insight: The Fox Who Was Always Busy
“Is it ready?” he said to the weasel, and then, into his buzzing pocket, “Two large, one plain, tell them twenty minutes,” and then, to the weasel again, “Is it ready?”
“No,” said the weasel.
“Tomorrow?”
“Maybe Thursday.”
Dr. Paul’s take: That fox is working as hard as he can and moving nothing forward. Every question goes through him, so every answer waits for him. Plenty of Lutz owners could see their own week in that scene: the phone, the crew, the customer, the supplier, all at once, all day. More effort will not fix it. A different role will. The owner has to stop being the answer to every question and start being the one who builds the answers. The small business management guide explains what that role looks like.

An Illustrative Owner Week, Hour by Hour
A made-up Lutz service owner working sixty hours. This is an illustration, not a survey. Run the same table on your own last week.
| Where the hours went | Hours | Only the owner can do it? |
|---|---|---|
| Answering calls and texts about scheduling | 9 | No. A trained office person or online booking can. |
| Doing the trade work on jobs | 22 | Some of it. The rest a lead could do. |
| Fixing mistakes someone else made | 6 | No. Written steps prevent most of them. |
| Quotes, invoices, and chasing payments | 8 | No. A bookkeeper or software can. |
| Buying supplies and running errands | 7 | No. |
| Big customers and pricing decisions | 5 | Yes. |
| Planning, numbers, and thinking ahead | 3 | Yes. And it is the smallest row. |
Look at the last two rows. Eight hours of owner-only work, buried under fifty-two hours of everything else. That ratio is what overwhelm feels like from the inside. You do not need more hours. You need different ones.
Sort Before You Work
Every Task Goes in One of Four Boxes
Take every line from your own time audit and put it in a box. Be ruthless. The first sort is the hardest one.
Does it matter?
Delete
Reports nobody reads, meetings that decide nothing, errands that could be a delivery. Stop doing them and see who notices.
Can someone else do it?
Delegate
Scheduling, invoicing, supply runs. Hand them off with clear steps and check results, not effort. The management guides cover how.
Does it repeat?
Document
Anything you explain more than twice gets written down once. That is how the fixing-mistakes row shrinks.
Only you?
Do
Pricing, big customers, hiring, and the plan. Put these on the calendar first, before the fires get there.
This sort is the Organize step of Dr. Paul’s Organize-Plan-Grow™ Strategy. It does not take a weekend retreat. It takes one honest hour and somebody to keep you honest the next week.
Hand-Off Help Near Lutz
Two Things an Overwhelmed Business Owner in Lutz Can Hand Off
The “hand it off” box only works if there is someone to hand it to. Lutz sits next to one big source of help and in the middle of one tricky detail.
USF Muma College of Business
A part-time intern, with rules
The University of South Florida’s business college shares employer internship postings with its students through Handshake. It strongly prefers paid roles, listed at $10 to $20 an hour, for 10 to 20 hours a week over a semester or a summer, and it requires the employer to provide a supervisor or mentor. That supervisor is you, so write the task down first.
Hillsborough and Pasco
Two sales tax rates in one community
For 2026, the state lists Hillsborough County’s total surtax at 1.5 percent and Pasco County’s at 1 percent, on top of the state’s 6 percent. Getting the right rate on every sale is detail work. Once it is written down, it is a job you can hand to a bookkeeper instead of carrying in your head.

Neither one fixes an overwhelmed business owner Lutz customers keep calling by itself. Both are things to bring to the weekly hour: pick one task, write it down, and hand it off before the next session.
The Weekly Hour
What Happens in an Hour of Accountability
The pillar card calls it a weekly hour of accountability. Here is exactly what goes in it, five questions in sixty minutes.
- What got done since last week?Minutes 0 to 10
Not what got started. What got finished.
- What do the numbers say?Minutes 10 to 20
Cash, sales, and what customers owe you. Five numbers, the same five every week.
- What is the one fire that keeps coming back?Minutes 20 to 40
Find the cause, then pick delete, delegate, or document.
- What are the three decisions for this week?Minutes 40 to 55
Three, not ten. Each one with a deadline and a name.
- What will stop you?Minutes 55 to 60
Name it now so it does not surprise you on Wednesday.
Nothing stops you from holding this hour on your own. Most owners do it twice and then the phone wins. Doing it with a business consultant works for the same reason a gym trainer works: somebody is waiting for you, and somebody asks what happened.
Ninety Days Later
What Changes When You Keep the Hour for a Quarter
Not overnight. Not perfect. But here is the direction owners can expect to move when they keep the hour for ninety days.
Before
- Every question comes to you
- The plan lives in your head
- You learn about cash trouble from the bank
- Big projects stay stuck at maybe Thursday
- Evenings go to invoices and texts
After
- A lead answers the routine questions
- Three priorities a week, written down
- Five numbers you check every Monday
- Projects with deadlines and owners
- Billing and scheduling handled without you
The Lutz Side
One Community, Two Counties, No City Hall
Lutz is not a city. It sits on both sides of the Hillsborough and Pasco line, and that adds one more thing to an owner’s plate: knowing which county you answer to.

Three Lutz resources worth knowing
Pasco Economic Development Council. Based in Lutz on Pointe Village Drive, it lists SMARTstart, business model training, and microloans for Pasco owners. Source: Pasco EDC.
Your county Tax Collector. On the Hillsborough side, the Hillsborough County Tax Collector issues business tax receipts for businesses located in the county. On the Pasco side, the Pasco County Tax Collector does. Your address decides which one.
Florida SBDC at USF. No-cost consulting, with Hillsborough and Pasco locations listed on its site.
Those resources help with starting and growing. The weekly hour is a different job, and it is the one Dr. Paul does, by phone and video from Deltona. He is a Florida business consultant, and this page is question 100 on the Tampa Bay business consultant page.
