What a Slow Yes Really Costs You

A long sales cycle does not feel like a cost. Nobody sends you an invoice for waiting. The money still leaves, quietly.

Illustration · made-up Davie contractor, rounded numbers

Same work. Same prices. Twice the wait.

Say you close $40,000 of jobs a month and take a 30 percent deposit at signing. Today a typical job takes 60 days from first quote to signed contract.

$40,000more in quotes sitting unsigned at any moment, compared to a 30-day cycle
$12,000in monthly deposits that land a full month later than they could
30 daysadded between your estimate hours and the first dollar of cash

Meanwhile, payroll, the truck note, insurance, and rent go out on schedule. You fund the gap from your own account or a credit line.

Cut your Davie sales cycle in half and nothing else has to change. No new customers. No discounts. If you want to see how timing hits your bank balance, the small business accounting and finance guide covers cash flow in plain words.

The Five Stops Between First Call and Yes

Why do Davie sales take so long to close? Almost every slow deal stalls at one of these five stops. Find yours, and you know what to fix first.

  1. Stop 1 · The first call

    Slow response

Prospects call several companies. The first to call back sets the pace.

Fix: answer new inquiries the same business day, even if it is just to book a time.

  2. Stop 2 · The visit or estimate

    Fuzzy scope

You walk the job, talk it through, and leave without agreeing on what they actually want.

Fix: end every visit by repeating back the scope in one sentence and asking, “Did I get that right?”

  3. Stop 3 · The quote

    A number with no walkthrough

An emailed PDF with a total at the bottom invites sticker shock and silence.

Fix: walk them through the quote by phone or in person, and ask when they plan to decide.

  4. Stop 4 · The quiet middle

    Unanswered questions

The buyer has questions they never ask. So they wait, or ask your competitor.

Fix: send one short guide that answers the questions every buyer has. More on that below.

  5. Stop 5 · The decision

    A surprise second decision-maker

A spouse, a partner, or a board shows up at the end and the clock resets.

Fix: ask at Stop 1, “Who else will weigh in on this?” and get them into the quote meeting.

Notice that none of these fixes are about pressure. They are about clarity. Buyers slow down when they are not sure what comes next. The small business marketing guide covers the full path from first contact to closed sale.

Davie Buyers, Davie Resources

Davie is a mix of buyers. Homeowners, small firms, and a large university community share the same town lines, and each one decides at a different speed.

What does that mean for your sales cycle? A business selling to the university crowd could face slow, committee-style buying with several people signing off. A business selling to homeowners may face the spouse who was not at the estimate.

Where Davie Owners Can Turn

A Quick Decision Tree for Every Open Quote

Not every open quote deserves more of your time. Run each one through these three questions once a week.

Question 1Did they answer your last message within a week?
YesGo to Question 2. The deal is alive.
NoGo to Question 3. Something is missing.
Question 2Do they have a decision date?
YesSlow but healthy. Put the date on your calendar and send one useful piece of information before it.
NoAsk for one. “When do you plan to decide?” is not pushy. It is planning.
Question 3Have you talked to the person who actually signs?
NoThat is your stall. Ask your contact to bring the signer into a short call.
YesSend a polite close-the-file note. Many buyers answer the moment they think the offer is going away.

Dr. Paul’s Insight: Answer the Question Before They Ask It

Dr. Paul’s Insight · From Marketing for Small Businesses, Book 4, Chapter 11, “The Sheet Everyone Took: An Octopus’s Packing Guide” · Dr. Paul’s Fabled Forest Business School Series

“Why would I give away what I know? That’s the service.”

Dr. Paul’s take: Plenty of owners worry that sharing what they know will let buyers do the job themselves. It works the other way. A short guide that answers the questions every buyer has shows that you know your stuff, and it fills the quiet middle of the sales cycle with something useful. Davie buyers who get their answers from you are less likely to go hunting for answers from someone else. Read more on using what you know as content in the small business marketing guide.

When Someone Else Controls the Decision Date

Some Davie buyers cannot say yes on their own schedule. Plan for them at Stop 1, not Stop 5.

  • The South Florida Education Center

FAU’s Davie campus page describes the campus as part of the South Florida Education Center with Broward College, with more than 300,000 square feet of labs, classrooms, and offices. A sale to a campus office could pass through a department head, a purchasing desk, and a budget calendar. Ask early who signs and when their budget opens.

  • Davie Road and CRA grants

The Davie CRA’s fiscal 2022 to 2023 annual report describes the finished Davie Road Phase III streetscape and a Commercial Property Improvement Program with major grants of up to $100,000 and minor grants of up to $10,000, both matching. If your customer is waiting on a grant like that, their yes may wait on the CRA.

Either way, the fix is the same one from the decision tree: get a real decision date. With an institution, it may be a budget month. With a grant, it may be the approval. Put it on your calendar, and the Davie sales cycle stops feeling like guesswork.

Sales Cycle Questions Davie Owners Ask

Why do my sales take so long to close?
Because the buyer is unsure about something and nobody made the next step obvious. The most common causes are a slow first response, a quote sent without a walkthrough, unanswered questions, and a second decision-maker who shows up late. Fix the stop where your deals stall and the whole cycle gets shorter.
How does a long sales cycle hurt cash flow?
You spend money to win the job long before you collect any. Estimate time, materials, and payroll go out on schedule while the quote sits unsigned. The longer the wait, the more of your cash is tied up in deals that have not closed, and the more you lean on savings or credit to cover the gap.
How do I know if a deal is dead?
Ask three questions. Did they answer your last message within a week? Do they have a decision date? Have you talked to the person who signs? If the answers are no, no, and yes, send a polite note closing the file. Many buyers reply as soon as they think the offer is going away.
Can Dr. Paul help me shorten my sales cycle?
Yes. In a business consulting session, Dr. Paul maps your sales process with you stop by stop, finds where your deals stall, and helps you build a simple follow-up plan. You run the plan. He helps you design it and check that it is working.

A faster yes is cash you already earned, arriving sooner.
