Four Things Owners Believe About Standing Out

Each of these sounds right. Each one quietly turns your business into one more option in a long list. If you want to stand out in West Palm Beach, drop all four.

Myth: Great quality is a difference.
Fact: Every competitor claims it, so customers assume it. Quality gets you considered. It does not get you chosen.
Myth: A lower price is a difference.
Fact: It is the easiest thing to copy. Someone can always go a little lower, and your margin pays for it.
Myth: Being local is enough.
Fact: Most of your competitors are local too. “Local” only works when it comes with something specific, like same-day service in your zip codes.
Myth: Customers will figure out what makes us special.
Fact: They will not do that work. If you cannot say it in one sentence, they will compare on price.

A difference is not a virtue. It is a fact a customer can check. “Fast” is a virtue. “We call back inside the hour, or the estimate is free” is a fact. Dr. Paul’s small business marketing guide shows more examples of the swap.

Dr. Paul’s Insight: They Can Copy the Jar, Not the Honey

Dr. Paul’s Insight · From Marketing for Small Businesses, Book 4, Chapter 15, “Feel It, It’s Real: A Bee’s Knockoff” · Dr. Paul’s Fabled Forest Business School Series

“He copied my jar, my crown, and nearly my name. What am I supposed to do, sue a sea otter?”

Dr. Paul’s take: The bee’s complaint is the one every good owner feels when a competitor borrows the look. The name, the logo, and the packaging are easy to copy. What is hard to copy is the thing a customer can actually feel: how fast you answer, how the job is left, what you know that the newcomer does not. If your difference lives only in the paint, a copycat on Clematis Street or anywhere else in West Palm Beach could take it in a weekend. Put it in the experience instead. The differentiation card in Dr. Paul’s small business marketing guide walks through it.

When Foot Traffic Thins, Your Reason Has to Be Louder

In late 2025, WPTV reported more vacant storefronts and “for lease” signs on the 500 block of Clematis Street, with owners pushing the city for pedestrian-only streets. One mini market owner pointed to high rent and insurance, and businesses on the block said sales jump 30 to 35 percent when it closes for events.

Read that event number carefully. Customers show up when they have a reason to. On an ordinary Tuesday, the businesses that do well downtown or anywhere else in West Palm Beach are the ones customers would make a special trip for. That reason is your difference. Owners who are brilliant at the craft often struggle to put it into words, and that is a normal place to ask for help.

  • City and county receipts. The City of West Palm Beach says a city Business Tax Receipt also requires a Palm Beach County receipt. Renewal runs July 1 to September 30.
  • The Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, now also branded “The Chamber”, is a place to hear how other owners describe themselves, and to test your sentence out loud.
  • The Florida SBDC at FAU serves Palm Beach County owners from its Boca Raton office.

Three Places Your Real Difference Is Hiding

You do not invent a difference. You dig it up. It is already in your customers’ heads; you just have not asked.

1

Your best customers

Call five of them. Not a survey, a call. Write down their exact words, because their words become your marketing.

Ask“Before you hired us, who else did you look at, and why did you pick us?”

2

The jobs you lost

Lost quotes tell you what customers value that you are not showing them. If three in a row went to the cheaper option, your difference is not visible yet.

Ask“What made the other company the better fit for you?”

3

Your competitors’ claims

Open five competitor websites. Copy each headline into a list. Cross out every claim that also appears on yours. Whatever your customers said in step one that is not crossed out is your starting point.

Ask yourself“What do we do that none of these pages even mention?”

Turn what you found into one sentence: who you serve, what you do for them, and the proof nobody else offers. Then run it through the scorecard below. This is the “Plan” stage of Dr. Paul’s Organize-Plan-Grow™ strategy.

Five Tests a Real Difference Must Pass

Score your sentence honestly. Four or five passes means use it everywhere. Two or fewer means keep digging.

TestPasses ifFails if
SpecificIt has a number, a time, a place, or a guaranteeIt is a virtue like “quality,” “care,” or “trusted”
FeltA customer would notice it during the jobOnly you would notice it
Hard to copyIt takes skill, time, or a system to matchA competitor could add it to a website tonight
WantedYour best customers brought it up on their ownYou had to explain why it matters
ProfitableYou can deliver it and still keep your marginIt only works if you give the job away

That last row matters more than owners expect. A difference that loses money is not a strategy. The small business accounting and finance guide shows how to check the margin, and the South Florida business consultant pillar covers the rest of the region’s marketing questions.

How to Stand Out in West Palm Beach When Newcomers Have Never Heard of You

Big employers keep landing in and around downtown. Every new office brings people who do not know which shop has the good reputation yet.

856+jobs ServiceNow expects to add in West Palm Beach over five years
200,000square feet ServiceNow will occupy at 10 CityPlace, permanent move set for mid-2028
Nearly 20,000financial and business services companies anchored in Palm Beach County

Sources: WLRN, September 16, 2025; Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, FY 2024 to 2025 Annual Report, which also ranks financial services the No. 2 sector by jobs.

A newcomer cannot lean on word of mouth they never heard. They compare you on a search page, side by side, in about a minute. That is where “quality and service” loses, and a checkable fact may win: a guaranteed callback time, a lunch-hour slot for office workers, a service built around a firm’s billing cycle.

If you sell to businesses, the finance cluster could matter even more. Firms like that may compare vendors on process and paperwork, not friendliness. Write your difference so a stranger in a new downtown office could repeat it after one read.

Standing Out: Questions West Palm Beach Owners Ask

How do I figure out what makes my business different?
Ask your best customers why they picked you, in their exact words. Look at the jobs you lost and why. Then line up what competitors claim on their websites. The real difference is the thing your customers mention that competitors do not, and that a newcomer could not copy quickly.
Is a lower price a good way to stand out?
Rarely. Price is the easiest difference to copy and the most expensive to keep. Someone can always go lower. Compete on price only if your costs are truly lower than everyone else’s. Otherwise, compete on something customers can feel and competitors cannot match next week.
What should I do if a competitor copies my business?
Talk to a trademark attorney if the name or logo is the issue. On the marketing side, move your difference into the experience: speed, results, guarantees, and expertise. Those are much harder to copy than a look. Then tell customers about them clearly and often.
Do I need a Palm Beach County business tax receipt in West Palm Beach?
Yes. The City of West Palm Beach says that if you get a City Business Tax Receipt, you also need one from Palm Beach County. City receipts renew from July 1 through September 30, and unpaid business taxes become delinquent on October 1.

Bring your website and your last three lost jobs. Leave knowing your difference.
