Introduction
Hey all, my name is Dr. Paul Borosky, and I’m the owner of Quality Business Plan.
Today, I’d like to introduce you to my new book: How to Write a Restaurant Business Plan in 10 Simple Steps.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to create a restaurant business plan, provide examples, and offer professional insights based on my years of experience as a business plan writer and author.
If you’d like me to write your plan for you, you can contact me through my website, call, or text using the link below.
About the Book
This book walks readers through every section of a restaurant business plan — from start to finish — using 10 simple, practical steps.
You can purchase the book directly from my website or on Amazon. It’s available as a downloadable PDF and as a paperback.
When you open the book, you’ll find a Table of Contents that allows you to either:
-
Follow the 10 steps in order, or
-
Jump directly to the section you need help with (for example, target market or market analysis).
This makes it flexible — whether you’re starting fresh or improving an existing plan.
Step Example: Target Market
One of my favorite topics to write about is the target market section.
Many new restaurant owners believe that everyone will love their food. However, not every restaurant appeals to every customer — and that’s okay.
Your goal is to define a clear target market so you can effectively use your limited advertising budget.
Examples include:
-
College area: ages 17–25, students and young adults
-
Downtown or business district: professionals, office workers, executives
-
Near hospitals: healthcare workers, visitors, and staff
When writing your plan, always keep your target market in mind as you design your menu, ambience, and marketing strategy. This ensures that your restaurant aligns with your customers’ preferences.
Step Example: Organization and Management
In this section, introduce your management team clearly and concisely.
Start with the owner or founder — explain their background, motivation, and role. Then introduce your executive chef, managers, and key staff members.
Keep the focus on restaurant experience.
For example, if your manager has both construction and restaurant experience, emphasize the restaurant experience. This helps establish credibility and alignment with your business goals.
Step Example: Funding Request
Most restaurants require funding — whether from investors, banks, or personal sources.
When writing your funding request, include:
-
Total amount requested (e.g., $1.5 million).
-
Type of funding — debt (loan) or equity (investment).
-
Loan terms — interest rate, repayment period, etc.
-
Use of funds — summarized in categories like:
-
Front of house equipment
-
Back of house equipment
-
General restaurant equipment
-
Inventory and supplies
-
Décor and office equipment
-
Avoid listing every single purchase. Instead, provide realistic budget categories that show planning without locking you into exact numbers.
Step Example: Market Research and Template (Page 88)
When you purchase the book, it includes a restaurant business plan template with general market research.
The template contains fillable sections in red, such as:
-
Restaurant name
-
Legal structure (LLC, corporation, partnership, etc.)
-
Market analysis fields
Simply replace the red text with your own information. Once completed, you’ll have a ready-to-use restaurant business plan for your operations or funding applications. For details about how this template has been updated, check out our watch page.
